Living in Lake County, Ohio
Lake Erie shoreline, small-town downtowns, parks everywhere, and an easy drive to Cleveland.
Lake County is Ohio’s smallest county by land area, but it packs a lot in: miles of Lake Erie shoreline, a huge network of parks, historic downtowns, and neighborhoods at every price point. It’s home base for me, and here’s my quick guide to the area.
COMMUNITIES
Where to live in Lake County
Mentor
The county’s largest city, with established neighborhoods, a big retail corridor, and Headlands Beach State Park on the lake. Lots of options from starter homes to lakefront.
Painesville & Painesville Twp
The county seat, with a historic downtown square and Lake Erie College. Good value, and a mix of older character homes and newer subdivisions.
Kirtland & Kirtland Hills
Wooded lots, rolling terrain, and a quieter feel. Home to the Holden Arboretum and some of the area’s most private estate properties.
Concord Township
Larger lots, newer construction, and quick access to Route 2 and I-90. Popular with move-up buyers who want space.
Willoughby
A walkable downtown full of restaurants and local shops, with a strong sense of community and a central location.
Madison & Perry
The east end of the county. More land, lake access, a rural feel, and wineries close by. Great for buyers who want acreage.
Fairport Harbor
A small lakefront village with a historic lighthouse, a public beach, and a harbor-town feel.
Eastlake, Willowick & Wickliffe
West-end communities near the lake with solid value and the shortest commute into Cleveland.
Waite Hill & Leroy Township
Low-density areas known for large parcels, horse properties, and secluded homes.
